TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AND EXPERIENCE

Sears hopes to teach theatre as a career, and she's considering working towards her masters of educational theatre after completing her BA in theatre.

Sears believes that theatre is a powerful tool, especially in the hands of children. Through theatre, children are introduced to the concept of story. Since each child will go on to live his or her own story after the curtain closes, an understanding of what makes a good, meaningful story is invaluable. And of course, theatre also helps children develop their creativity and an independent confidence in their intuition, which will help them in all facets of life.

Thus far, Sears' teaching experience has primary been a middle school drama club through the city of Sioux Center. Sears' first class (Winter 2016) consisted of 8 students who met twice a week to practice improv, character development, and general story-arc skills. Sears' second class (Fall 2016) consisted of sixteen students who met once a week. Both classes culminated in a performance for parents and friends.

Sears has also co-taught a stage combat class of 25 high schoolers for Dordt College's High School One Act Festival (November 2016) and an elementary improv class of 15 elementary students through her educational theatre course at Dordt College (November 2015).
